Climate Forecasting Panel

In this panel at the International Symposium on Forecasting in Boston, Green, Armstrong and Soon will argue that Fildes and Kourentzes's 2011 findings extend and reinforce their 2009 findings. They make suggestions for further extensions and, with the help of new forecasts from Fildes and Kourentzes's models, present new findings on some of the proposed extensions. Robert Fildes will be on the panel, as will ISF featured speaker Professor Leonard Smith (LSE), and leading climate scientist Professor Richard Lindzen (MIT). The session will allow time for questions and discussion.

ISF keynote speaker Phil Dolci

Global warming policies bad for health?

In a new (2 May 2012) report from the Global Warming Policy Foundation, Indur Goklany concludes that policies intended to reduce global warming may cause more harm than good to the health of people in both developing and industrialized countries. In particular, poverty is a much greater threat to health. The report is available here.

Call for Papers on "Machine Aggregation of Human Judgment"

Papers are invited for the AAAI Fall Symposium 2012 on topics that are of interest to forecasting researchers. These include information elicitation and presentation, and prediction markets. The Symposium organizers are expecting to attract researchers from fields including econometrics, political science, and intelligence analysis. The Symposium is being held in Arlington, VA, from November 2-4. The call for papers is here.

32nd International Symposium on Forecasting June 24-27, 2012 in Boston

Boston, MA, Feb 28, 2012 – Integrating academic research into practical application is one of many business issues tackled at the 32nd annual International Symposium on Forecasting (ISF) to be held June 24 - 27 in Boston, The ISF draws the world's top forecasting professionals and researchers, presenters and participants, to learn and discuss cutting-edge forecasting trends.

The premiere international conference on forecasting, the ISF encompasses a broad range of forecasting sectors. This year's event includes sessions on forecasting for climate predictability, recession in real time, financial market volatility, forecast optimality, and a history of prediction science.

"The Symposium provides a platform for leading forecasting professionals to reveal their insights into the field, with a particular focus on economic forecasting this year," says P. Geoffrey Allen, General Chair of ISF 2012, professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and past International Institute of Forecasters (IIF) President.

New in 2012: Best Research, Best Practice will include the Foresight Practitioner Track (FPT) – three days of programming designed to meet the professional development needs of forecasting practitioners. The practitioner program includes full days delving into the topics of sales & operations planning (S&OP), the forecasting process and scenario planning.

Also new this year will be the Arnold Zellner Memorial Keynote Address in honor of the late econometrician and professor emeritus at the University of Chicago. Dr. James Stock, a professor of Economics at Harvard University will be the recipient of the honor for ISF 2012.
